Long Walk to Freedom Mandela Mural

Full Flava Arts have been commissioned to create The Mandela Mural in response to the following brief.

The Freedom Festival and Roots & Wings Joint Commissioning programme is based around themes of light and shadow, freedom and oppression. In remembrance and in celebration of Nelson Mandela's legacy. The Freedom Festival will be creating 'The Long Walk to Freedom' a path of light from the Wilberforce Institute of Slavery and Emancipation in High Street to the Fruit Market area in Hull. The commissioned artworks will be presented as part of 'The Long Walk to Freedom' section of the festival.

We have invited 11 graffiti artists to create this mural together, each bringing their own ideas, style and imagery, but within the overall framework in responding to the

•the life and work of Nelson Mandela

•Freedom and oppression- particularly the struggle against apartheid in South Africa

•light and shaddow- both in the style of the graffiti work and in the theme and images

The mural will be about 75ms long by 2.4ms high thus allowing 16ft by 8ft area for each artists to create their master piece.

It will be viewable during the day but also needs to work after dark so we are exploring the use of ultra violet or black light to create luminous and flourescent areas in the mural. Please check the links below to view examples.

The artists will draw their references material about Mandela from sources such as, the internet ,video footage, speeches, quotes etc.

They should be an overall 'feel for the mural that is both celebratory and respectful of Nelson Mandela, and ensure that there is little or no repetition in the images and quotes used by different artists. Full Flava Arts will curate and direct the graffiti contributions of each artist.

Sub-stance sound system will be providing the P.A. DJays and Mc's will be there to provide music throughout the 2 days.
